Architectural Wonders of the Ethiopian Highlands

Situated in the mountainous region of northern Ethiopia, Lalibela is home to 11 monolithic churches carved entirely out of solid red basalt rock. Commissioned by King Lalibela in the late 12th century as a 'New Jerusalem', these subterranean shrines were excavated downwards into trenches without using a single mortar joint or exterior block.
